This homey, two story vegetarian restaurant hides within in the gated courtyard of the Meiyuan hotel. The extensive menu comes with photographs of the actual dishes and excellent English translations. This is also the only vegetarian restaurant these editors have visited in Beijing with alcohol on the menu.

I just returned from Tranquil Thoughts - it is one of the very best vegetarian restaurants I have been too - wonderful staff, mixed crowd of hipsters and squares, I had the veggie beef with fragrant chilli it was so great and the fried veggie strips with sweet dough wrappers ( burritos! ). Thank you Chinabites, whoever you are, for saving me tonight saving me from the hotel bar restaurant. -Brett Wolmarans, from Los Angeles
