Two Wonderful Dai Dishes

Posted: Oct. 12, 2009

I had dinner this evening in northern Kunming at a Dai Ethnic restaurant called Dai People’s Restaurant.

This was one of those “point-and-shoot” restaurants with no actual menu, just a tall refrigerator in the dining room which contained raw food materials which you could point to and order, and which would subsequently be cooked and brought to your table. Two dishes stood out in the excellent meal. The first was fried banana flatbread:

The second was a dish that was described by one of my dining companions as “so nutritious you might be allergic to it”. Not confidence inspiring and perhaps even less so after I learned the sadly-not-euphamistic name of the dish: bee larvae.

That image also has the distinction of being the 800th added to Chinabites. Here’s hoping the next 800 are just as weird and wonderful!
