On my last evening in Hong Kong I went with some friends to Goldfinch Restaurant in Causeway Bay, where the nighttime diner scenes for 2046 and In the Mood for Love were filmed. The four of us who went had a great time goofing around, photographing each other in famous poses from the movie.
Dinner was also memorable. Three of us got the dinner sets, which came with tea or coffee, bread, a Hong Kong style borscht, and a main course, mostly some variation on steak. Steak holds a special place in Chinese culture as “the food that everyone eats everyday in America”, it follows that any respectable Western style diner would serve nearly nothing but different types of fancy steaks.
In my opinion, the most wonderful steak on the menu was the ostrich steak, topped with a maraschino cherry.
I have since moved on from Hong Kong to warmer and more exotic climes. Expect another blog post soon summarizing the four months of living and eating mainly in the Causeway Bay neighborhood of Hong Kong.
