I was introduced last night to one of the vestiges of French colonialism in Vietnam, the Vietnamese sandwich, or "Bánh mì".
Although my intrepid dining companion assured me that this particular sandwich was not a the height of achievement in the Vietnamese sandwich genre, he nevertheless gushed with praise about this French / Vietnamese fusion food group as a whole. Generally served on a baguette, they combine pork or chicken, a mayonnaise-like dressing, and veggie goodness of the spicy south-east Asian variety. The sandwich above looks to me a bit more like a "Vietnamese Sloppy Joe" than fine dining, but we'll have our eye out for this Bánh mì's more delicious cousins at other Vietnamese restaurants in the near future.
