One of the most enjoyable aspects of dining out in Hong Kong has got to be the excellent South and South East Asian cuisine that can be had here. I have a friend who works late hours in Tai Hang so a couple nights a week I'll walk down and have dinner with him there, and more often than not we've been eating Thai and Vietnamese.
We usually hit up Golden Dragon Thai for its (relatively) low cost, yet outrageously good food. On this particular night it was closed, so we moved operations down the block to the next Thai restaurant, Krua Thai and were glad we did.
Krua Thai is definitely a step up in terms of environment, i.e. you're not eating on the sidewalk as you are at Golden Dragon, and there's a corresponding rise in price, albeit not prohibitively so. The two wonderful surprises on the menu were the red curry, which was made with the tender, yet plucky asian eggplant (so much more delicious than its bready, heavy American cousin).
The other pleasant surprise was the fried rice, which can be ordered stir fried with fresh fruit. We had ours with pomelo (sometimes called citron), but as the bard would have it, a pomelo by any other name is still totally delicious. This pomelo made a perfect addition to the rice and the sweetness was an excellent counterpoint to the rich curry. This restaurant is definitely worthy of a repeat, although next time perhaps with the mango fried rice.
PS: At Krua Thai we also found out where cell phones go when they die in Hong Kong:
