the classic mistake

There are already a bunch of really good websites about Beijing that face an English-speaking foreign audience, so why bother making another?  This is the point in a paragraph that I’d tell you why, if I thought it actually was a good idea.  Honestly though, its not really.  The fact remains, however, that I needed some project, any project to get me started back on the web development path after a relaxing 10 year break.  That, and contractual obligations prevented me from immediately making a web site competing with my former employer.  Not that I would ever think of doing that guys, <3 ya!

And so chinabites was born.

As a 6 year resident of Beijing who loves really good Chinese food, maybe more than anything else in the entire world, I thought this was a webs project that could sustain my interest.  I was mostly right.  I’ve been developing chinabites in fits and starts for about 8 or 9 months now.  It was my introduction to django, python, object oriented programming, javascript, maps, and well … pretty much everything you need to build a web apps these days.

This blog is my belated attempt at documenting the process of building chinabites and my ongoing thoughts about publishing on the internets in the ninties and beyond.  I welcome you along for what will surely be a breathtaking ride.  You can say you were down with cb since way back in the day, back when microsoft still existed, and when mis-pluralizing every instantiation of the concept of network computing was a sure fire way to win friends and influence people.
